The challenge was simple: how can we reduce our specialized maintenance teams, and still guarantee the conformity of the equipment and the processes? In fact, a specific number of resident teams was needed per facility, and each one had different qualification levels. This translated into high costs and the use of extensive resources for standalone tasks.
The key problem was decomposed into three different but complementary issues: (1) Information was dispersed into three different platforms (2) Complex maintenance and inspection procedures, (3) Different levels of expertise and knowledge.
13 million customers for electricity and gas solutions
14 countries with active global operations
3rd largest utility in the Iberian Peninsula
To reduce the resources used during standalone tasks, field operators were provided with a powerful tool that can support them during maintenance and inspection processes.

Maintenance and inspection procedures were hindered by data fragmentation across multiple systems, making it difficult for teams to access the right information at the right time. Both expert and junior operators lacked the tools for autonomous task execution, leading to a heavy reliance on specialized teams being physically present at every facility. This resulted in high maintenance costs and safety risks, as experts were overstretched and junior staff lacked real-time guidance.
EDP provided its field operators with a unified platform featuring 2D and Augmented Reality (AR) step-by-step guides. By centralizing data and providing contextual training on-site, the company empowered its workforce to perform complex standalone tasks independently. This transformation allowed managers to receive immediate feedback and reduced the need for expert travel by 15%, as senior specialists could now support multiple locations remotely through visual assistance.
