Single-Minute Exchange Dies

Maintenance, production, safety, quality, inspection, audits and much more procedures can be digitised with the new Augmented & Connected Worker solution.

What is a SMED procedure?

The Single-Minute Exchange of Dies (SMED) procedure seeks to reduce the equipment setup time to a single minute. The SMED is a progressive procedure that aims to optimize a small part of the process, at every execution, until teams achieve the minimum changeover time possible.

The SMED helps reduce the number of tasks, by excluding those which are not useful for changeovers. This allows processes to become faster, easier, and more efficient.

How is the SMED implemented?

The process starts by identifying changeover tasks. Secondly, tasks undergo an analysis to find their true purpose, and, identify low costs solutions to replace them. Finally, new solutions are put in place to reduce changeover time and costs.

The process is made up of several steps that aim to reduce unnecessary tasks, and also  redirect human effort to more relevant parts of the operation.

How the Connected Worker platform can improve the procedure?

Digital Work Instructions

Process digitization can be done using digital platforms that organize processes and feature calendar tasks calendar according to each worker. As a result, frontline workers will be able to access crucial information to support task executions. Simultaneously, managers can track results and control executions in real time.

AR Mobility & Guidance

Using an AR tool, whether on HoloLens or mobile devices, team members can access different inputs, workflow, documents, and AR guides that augment their capabilities and surround them with contextual information. This helps reduce training efforts as workers have reliable and complete support tools to perform tasks.

Benefits

Of going from Paper to Digital Procedures

These tools optimize the process by reducing its length and achieving the one-minute mark. Managers will have more visibility over operations and access digital automated reports to inform their decisions. Overall, strategic decisions will be more accurate, while changeover time is significantly cut. Ultimately, more efficient changeover procedures will translate into more time for production.

How can Glartek help?

Data can be centralized into a single digital platform that allows for the full visibility of all processes. In fact, managers will have more control over operations with the aid of automated reports as well as dashboards, which help speed up analysis and improve the detection of useless tasks. As a result, it is possible to eliminate or automate such tasks. The platform, supported by a mobile app with Augmented Reality (AR) helps workers during the execution of new changeover processes, avoiding regularly creating new training needs.
