LOCKOUT/TAGOUT (LOTO)

Maintenance, production, safety, quality, inspection, audits and many other procedures can

be digitized with the new Augmented & Connected Worker solution.

WHAT IS THE LOTO PROCEDURE?

The LOTO procedure is a safety process that aims to ensure that no equipment contains any kind of “hazardous energy”, either chemical, hydraulic, electrical, or pneumatic, among others. This procedure is executed by frontline employees, more specifically by those who are involved with equipment maintenance operations.

The Lockout/Tagout procedure can only be executed by authorized employees by following detailed steps. This allows workers to disable all equipment from presenting a danger that may cause injury or death.

The LOTO procedure

HOW IS THE LOTO IMPLEMENTED?

Lockout

The process starts by understanding equipment risk behaviors regarding energy, toxicity, temperatures, and others. The machine is then shut down and isolated from the source of danger.

There are 7 mandatory steps to execute a correct Lockout/Tagout process, and that will ensure the safety of operational teams.

As a safety procedure, LOTO also includes requirements to apply after the maintenance task execution, which include: the work needs to be complete, all tools withdrawn from the workplace, and workers must guarantee machine safety before they begin operating again.

HOW CAN DIGITAL PLATFORMS IMPROVE THE PROCESS?

DIGITAL WORK INSTRUCTIONS

Process digitization is can be done using a digital platform to guarantee that workers have the most important information at their disposal, as well as visual guidance tools. Since it is a process that often translates into one-man operations, and that may be dangerous, by providing exact guidance with visual support to workers, it will be easier to reduce human error and potential danger.

CONTEXTUAL IOT DATA

With the navigation support of Augmented Reality (AR), workers become more aware of their environment. Technology guides workers with IoT contextual information that indicates dangerous areas and helps them avoid avoiding dangerous equipment or zones.

BENEFITS

Of transitioning from Paper to Digital Procedures

Workers are more prepared and aware of what the procedure entails by being supported by workflows and inputs on their own devices, which they can easily consult when interacting with the equipment that requires a LOTO procedure. Additionally, with IoT information, it is easier to understand equipment behaviors, which can be a strong indicator of the degree of “hazardous energy” that machines can contain. Both technologies, reduce the possibility of workers executing a dangerous move that may cause them injuries.

HOW CAN GLARTEK HELP?

With our technology, it becomes possible to digitize processes and organize specific workflows to provide workers with real-time support during task execution. Additionally, our app includes a specific feature to help confirm  workers’ safety using regular health verification checkpoints. These features highly reduce the risk of taking too long to react to unexpected situations, that may happen to the team. Our AR app is compatible with both HoloLens and smartphone devices. In addition, it is easier to provide access to visual guidance and contextual information to any team members.
