Use Case
Gemba Walk

What is it?

“Gemba” means “real place” in Japanese. This process goal is to make supervisors observate the work where it actually takes place, asking questions and respecting the team. This aims to explore opportunities for continuous improvement.

The Gemba Walk is usually executed by leaders, so they can actually see that is happening, and evaluate the differences between what they planned for a specific process, whereas what is actually being done. For this reason, it is important that while executing the Gemba Walk, leaders take time to execute the walk, as well as speak with field-workers that are executing the process.

How is it implemented?

How is it implemented?

There are 7 steps to apply a successful Gemba Walk: define a theme, prepare the team, focus on the process, be at the right place where the value is, record the observation, be accompanied and follow-up.

  1. Pick a theme
  2. Prepare your team
  3. Focus on process, not people
  4. Be where the value stream is
  5. Record observations
  6. Bring support: Have more eyes then yours on the walk
  7. Follow-up

One of the key focuses of Gemba Walks is to understand what the team that executes the process have to say about it. That is why the conversation with field workers is very important. However, it should by only focused on the process.

How Industry 4.0 can influence the process?

STEP 1: Process Digitalization

The Gemba Walk checklist can be registered on digital platforms. This will simplify its execution fo workers who carry it out. Hence, it provides information in real-time on workers mobile devices. This checklists provided by Industry 4.0 can help deploying an improved mobility inside factory’s walls.

STEP 2: Visual evidences

The process can be optimized by collecting visual evidence of the observation to facilitate the follow-up analysis. By including videos and photography, the observation output will be more complete and credible.

Improved mobility

Centralized and easy access information

Efficiency increase

Digital checklists facilitate workers daily tasks by simplifying their access to relevant information. This will ultimatly increase productivity. Additionally, the visual evidence provides an increased visibility of the value chain, increasing the relevance of the outputs. The output can be centralized and automated reports can be extracted in view of continuous improvement.

How can we help?

The checklists can be elaborated in our process digitalization platform. This platform digitizes processes, and centralizes different inputs, to optimize and organize information in order to deploy a relevant tool for workers. Supproted by our app, workers can access their checklists in real-time. The step-by-step can be registered in the workflow with OK/NOK and text inputs, in order to find potentials for improvement. Additionaly, our tool facilitates the inclusion of visual execution evidences by including specific tasks along the workflow that demand it.
